Udupi, Oct 30, 2022: Uppinakudru in Kundapur taluk is not only known for its scenic surroundings but also for its world famous Bombeyata or puppet shows that have struck a chord with the people through fascinating performances.

The credit goes to the Uppinakudru Sri Devanna Padmanabha Kamath Memorial Yakshagana Bombeyata Trust which functions under the leadership of Bhasker Kogga Kamath, a sixth generation puppeteer of the renowned Uppinakudru family.

The puppets are made locally using locally available raw materials. If most of the puppets are based on Yakshagana themes, Bhasker Kamath has been instrumental in creating spider man and Bharatanatyam puppets too. He has also documented different aspects of Yakshagana puppetry and the 15 member team performs the puppet show with utmost dedication.

In recognition of its yeoman efforts, the Trust has won the Sri Vishwesha Theertha Award given by Yakshagana Kalaranga of Udupi. The team’s efforts in spreading the fragrance of Yakshagana Puppet show both in the nation and abroad is much hailed.

The troupe presents both mythological and contemporary issues through the puppet shows. There is also a Yakshagana Gombeyata Academy at Uppinakudru with a Gombe Mane building that was possible with the support of several donors. The Academy conducts classes, courses and presents performances every month.
